Working at home really sounds like a dream come true. Not having to get dressed, no long commute, no bothersome fellow employees, etc. The list of pros could go on and on but shockingly there are some cons to consider. Mainly, distractions. You don't really think about all the distractions that can keep you from getting your work done and being as efficient as you may want to be. Pets, kids, the phone, all can hinder your performance. The key to being distraction free is to create a space specifically for working. An extra bedroom, a large closet, or even the basement, can give you the peace and quiet you need to get your work done.
Once you have a quiet place to work, you still are not fully distraction free. Your computer can have numerous distractions just waiting to catch you off guard and make you lose valuable time by checking emails, playing an addicting game, or updating your Facebook status. All it takes is one thing to get you off track and before you know it, you've missed a hour or more of working. There is a solution for this problem in the form of software for your browser that blocks certain sites for specific amounts of time. There is Concentrate for Chrome users and Leechblock for Firefox users. These sites allow you to set a timer and will block the use of all these distractions until the time is up. Also Byword and OmmWrite eliminate distractions by offering full screen text editors.
Now you have a designated area to work and the access to sites that will block other sites, you can get your work done. No one will ever be fully free of distractions especially with a family and the constant new ways to be social online but with a lot of willpower and determination, it can be done and you can be successful at it.
